What’s it all about? The Capital Area Independent Business Alliance (CAIBA) along with more than 150 affiliated ‘buy local’ groups across the United States will celebrate INDEPENDENTS WEEK July 1-7. Independents Week was started several years ago to raise awareness among consumers of the important economic and cultural contributions locally owned, independent businesses make in their communities.
How does Springfield fit in? The CAIBA’s motto is: Eat, drink, shop, think LOCAL FIRST. While this message is valid all year long, during this special week long celebration the group urges consumers and business owners alike to make a special effort to spend at least 50 cents of every dollar during the week of July 1-7 with independent, locally owned businesses.
Why does LOCAL FIRST matter? Research conducted across the country confirms that at least 45 cents of every dollar spent with a local independently owned business re-circulates within the community while only 13 cents of a dollar spent with a national chain actually stays in that community. (The manager of a local chain store typically takes today’s earnings and wire transfers it to a bank in another state like Arkansas or Pennsylvania. The impact of the dollars spent with that firm just went to another state, where their citizens get the benefit of it. Shopping with national chain operations greatly diminishes the economic impact of a dollar.)

Of $100 spent at a chain store only $13 remains in the local economy, but $45
out of every $100 spent with an independent local business goes to work in
our local economy.
Our local businesses provide us personal service and real value while supporting
a wide range of community organizations and events. They also contribute to the
distinct character that makes Springfield special.
Chain stores often bring in their own bankers, builders and designers and managers.
But when local businesses grow they hire local architects, engineers, accountants,
ad agencies … they buy their insurance, supplies and media locally. They hire
locally and their profits stay locally.
